A New Andy Kaufman performs in Las Vegas
Andy Kaufman has been banned from Comedy Clubs in Denver
"ANDY KAUFMAN" PLAYING VEGAS AFTER BEING BANNED FROM COMEDY CLUBS IN DENVER
Another Andy Kaufman Revives the Comedy Brand
/Performing Arts PR News/ - DENVER, CO, January 21, 2006 - Bearing the name Andy Kaufman is hard enough but when you are also a comedian with a brand of humor that tests the limits of people's imagination and patience, it can be an even greater challenge. That is exactly what is happening to a second Andy Kaufman. A comic who's been writing with and for Philadelphia radio personality Steve Trevelise since 2004, Kaufman performs his own stand up in Denver. Andy has been called the "Apocalypse of Comedy" and "The most hated man in Denver" by fellow comedians yet the audiences enjoy his off beat style and characters. As Andy says, "I can't help it, this is my name, and this is what I think is funny. If people want to compare me to a seemingly dead guy, who am I to argue?" He uses the name The Late Andy Kaufman but always gets to every show and appointment early.
What makes Andy so unique is that one way or another his New York style of humor catches peoples' attention. "They laugh and look for permission to laugh even more," explains Kaufman. Audience members want to laugh when he reads Dr. Seuss to them, but are not quite sure why it seems so funny. Andy tells jokes about himself, his family, his view of the world and his life experiences that would make others cringe, but Andy is at his best when commenting on the events of the day. Once he gets rolling, it's best to stand back and let it flow.
As Princeton "Catch a Rising Star" club manager Steve Trevelise found out, what makes Andy attractive to the radio audience as a contributing caller is his quick drawn view of the news of the day. "There are no topics which can't be made funny. Andy had the guts to compare The Pope to Superman when they both were in wheel chairs and unable to speak. And it was a riot," Steve adds, 'Andy has certainly found his niche with our audience, so much so that when things happen, people can't wait to tune in and hear Andy's take on the situation. If Jon Stewart leads to Steven Colbert, Steven Colbert should lead to Andy Kaufman", laughs Trevelise.
Having written and performed in Denver, Andy Kaufman will be playing The Las Vegas Comedy Festival, Jan 24-27, where industry leaders will get a chance to see his performances. And it's a good thing, because, due to his edgy envelope pushing, Andy has been banned from The Comedy Works in Denver for six months. As Andy says, "Who cares, I must be doing something very right?"
The Denver comedy community will be roasting Andy for his birthday on February 22 at Jazz @ Jacks in Denver with an "Andy Kaufman SUCKS Roast." According to Andy, "You know they love you when they expend that much energy to hate you." Some local comics even put up an Andy Kaufman hate web site which was taken down when Andy laughed about it. Fellow Denver comedian Jason Lindsay who will be MCing the toast and runs www.milehighcomedy.com said " You can't keep your eyes off Andy because you never know what he might do next" adding "Andy Kaufman's in-your-face style of comedy takes no prisoners and leaves no survivors"
Through it all, Andy Kaufman has continued to perform his own audacious humor, even though he does carry another audacious comedian's name.
About The Late Andy Kaufman:
Andy began his career as a street character at Six Flags Great Adventure dressing as Groucho Marx and terrorizing children while amusing adults. At one point his bosses had to take away his Little Red Riding Hood story telling puppet because some of the jokes were more adult then should have been expected. Andy also worked in college radio, local television in NJ, at MTV in the early years,, and was even a dolphin trainer for one summer. It has been these experiences and trying to get through life with the name Andy Kaufman that has fostered his humor. Andy has also worked in corporate America in telecommunications, internet and television production, but has to be called "Drew" or "Andrew" because the question "Aren't you dead?" got really tired really fast. When Andy started bringing his acerbic and audacious humor back to radio, it was just a matter of time before he would get up on stage himself. Andy is working on a reality show pilot called "Being Andy Kaufman" which documents the struggle of trying to be both famous, infamous and unknown at the same time. Andy has performed at The Comedy Works, Jazz at Jacks, Wit's End in Denver; The Beach at the Convention Center in Las Vegas and other comedy clubs.
