Previews begin at the Shaw Festival for outrageous Panych/Feydeau farce Hotel Peccadillo

The Shaw Festival's production of Morris Panych's Hotel Peccadillo, an adaptation of the Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières farce L'Hôtel du Libre-Echange, began preview performances on Thursday at the Festival Theatre.

/Performing Arts PR News/ - NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, ON, CANADA, June 07, 2007 - Panych and Feydeau - together at last. What happens when one of Canada's top playwrights, known for his unique brand of clever humour and absurd situations, takes on the leading writer of the classic French farce? It's Hotel Peccadillo - an adaptation of Feydeau's enduring play with a definite Panych-ian twist.

Panych's take on Feydeau gives us a world inhabited by a repressed sex therapist (Patrick Galligan), his cosmetic surgery-mad wife (Goldie Semple) and a libido-driven culture critic (Benedict Campbell)- with an airline pilot (David Leyshon) and his lusty stewardesses thrown into the mix. It's Feydeau via Some Like it Hot and Ocean's Eleven.

And then there is Feydeau himself (Lorne Kennedy), in this case back from the dead to lead us through the craziness as the proprietor of the Hotel Peccadillo, where everyone ends up - and acts up - in this deliciously outrageous new take on an old form.

Panych sees Feydeau - who embraced the abandon, the delirium, and the mad turns of life - as someone to admire in our serious and often sanctimonious times. Isn't it time we all had a little more fun?

The cast also includes Charlotte Gowdy as Marcelle, Jeff Irving as Maxime, Trish Lindström as Victoire, and Mike Nadajewski as Boulot; as well as Anthony Bekenn, Catherine Braund, Laurie Paton, Melanie Phillipson, Katrina Reynolds, Kiera Sangster, Devon Tullock and William Vickers.

Hotel Peccadillo is directed by Morris Panych, with set design by Ken MacDonald, costume design by Nancy Bryant, lighting design by Alan Brodie, music composition and direction by Ryan deSouza, and sound design by John Lott. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Beatrice Campbell and Assistant Stage Manager Dora Tomassi.

Hotel Peccadillo began preview performances Thursday, May 31; opens Saturday, June 16; and plays in repertory until Sunday, October 7.

The 2007 season is proudly presented by HSBC Bank Canada/HSBC Bank USA.
