SANTA FE, CA, November 15, 2008 /Performing Arts PR News/ -- A little boy once approached magician Jay Marshall and announced, "I want to be a magician, too, when I grow up." Marshall replied, "Son, you can't do both."
Therein lays the mystery behind Marshall's magic act. He never lost his childlike sense of wonder. With card tricks, sleight-of-hand and ventriloquism he kept his audiences wondering right along with him.
With "Lefty" his white-gloved hand puppet Jay Marshall entertained audiences for over 60 years.
Marshall understood that deep down people want to believe in magic. They may know intellectually they're seeing tricks. But, they're willing to let go of that disbelief.
At least momentarily.
In 1992 Marshall was named the official dean of the Society of American Magicians.
Marshall died in 2005 at age 85. Lefty his beloved puppet is housed in the Smithsonian Institution.
On July 27, a selection of books, apparatus and memorabilia from Jay Marshall's magic collection went on the block at Potter & Potter Auctions.
A color lithograph poster; The Famous Magician Beauty the Arabian Steed, Vanishes in Mid Air; circa 1922; three-sheet; 76 ½ inches by 41 inches; sold for $6,000.
