Chicana Gypsy Project from Spain to Make U.S. Debut!
A gripping blend of Flamenco, Jazz and Chicana Culture Straight from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
PORTLAND, OR, December 09, 2008 /Performing Arts PR News/ -- Chicana Gypsy Project, a blend of pure gypsy Flamenco, American Jazz and "Chicana" culture hits the U.S. stage for the first time on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Drom, located at 85 Avenue A in New York City. The performance, which is a sanctioned showcase of the Association of Arts Presenters Conference, begins at 7:00 p.m. and tickets are $15 and can be purchased at http://www.dromnyc.om or by calling 212/777-1157.
Founded by world renowned Flamenco artist Maria Bermudez, Chicana Gypsy Project brings to the stage the blend of cultures and environments that has shaped her entire artistic career: humble beginnings in the "Chicano" barrios of Los Angles, decades of life in the birthplace of Flamenco: Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and her roots as a singer.
Bermudez has spent the past two decades sharing the stage with Flamenco's finest artists of both yesterday and today, including the late Jose Vargas "El Mono", Antonio "El Pipa", Rafael Campallo, El Capullo, Antonio de la Malena, Ana de los Reyes and many more. Now she brings together a diverse group of artists including Gypsies and non-Gypsies from across Andalucia, Spain, to collaborate on this new concept, sound and approach to Flamenco fusion. Nothing like it can be found anywhere in the world.
Chicana Gypsy Project's repertoire highlights Bermudez' vocal prowess with Jazz classics like "Summertime," but then seamlessly transitions to a traditional Flamenco "Solea", giving the audience a taste of both her worlds as a singer and a dancer. The group includes traditional Flamenco guitarists and vocalists well as Jazz's characteristic double bass, electric guitar and drums.
Chicana Gypsy Project is currently scheduling a North American tour for 2009/10. For booking inquiries, please contact Rachel Cohen at Cadence Arts Network: cadencearts@aol.com.
