BALAM Dance Theatre Announces Fundamentals of Balinese Dance Workshop Series

BALAM Dance Theatre is sponsoring a four-class workshop, Fundamentals of Balinese Dance, that will be taught by prominent Balinese dancer Nani Devi in November and December, 2011 at DANY Studios located at 305 West 38th Street in New York City.

    NEW YORK, NY, November 02, 2011 /Performing Arts PR News/ -- BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) brings Bali to New York this fall in the new Fundamentals of Balinese Dance workshop. The four class workshop will be taught on Saturdays, November 5 from 3-4 p.m., November 12 from 4-5 p.m., December 3 from 12-1 p.m., December 10 from 12-1 p.m., at DANY Studio, 305 West 38th Street.

BALAM, a New York City-based company, promotes a new vision of contemporary dance fusing ballet and modern with Balinese theatre and diverse cultural dance styles. The company's resident Balinese guest artist, Nani Devi, a celebrated performer from Bali, who has toured and taught throughout the world, will provide expert instruction that enhances a performer's physical expression.

Students will discover another culture's skilled movement patterns and experience masculine and feminine archetypes. They will learn how to develop three-dimensional hand and arm movements, acquire fierce eyes, present a mysterious, sweet smile, and much more.

Nani Devi, BALAM Resident Balinese Guest Artist

Ms. Devi specializes in and performs classical Balinese dance, as well as those from the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java, Borneo and Sulawesi. She appeared with BALAM's artistic director Carlos Fittante at Lehman College in the company's presentation of "Devas, Divas and Mortals" in an excerpt from the scintillating Oleg Tambulilingan (Love Dance of the Bumblebees).

Born in Bali, Indonesia, Ms. Devi began dancing at the early age of ten in the village of Tabanan. Noted for dancing with a natural grace and sweet expression, she was selected by the Indonesian government to perform in the palaces of Bali for visiting heads of state promoting Indonesian dance forms for the Ministry of Culture.

She serves as Artistic Director of the Nani Devi Indonesian Dance Company and is an instructor at Lotus Music and Dance Studio, a gathering place for master performers and teachers of traditional world music and dance in New York City.
